Neck of Femur Fractures Project

Welcome to the EM3 NOF page! My name is Dr Brent Stevenson and I am one of the emergency medicine registrars.

Alongside a group of amazing colleagues, I am working to improve the management of patients in LRI ED presenting with neck of femur fractures.

This patient population can be particularly vulnerable and often develop complications during and after their acute injury, meaning they have significant morbidity rates. Unfortunately, the one-month mortality rates are also very high, with one in ten patients dying. The one-year mortality figures are even higher (one in three). As such, there are national standards and guidelines for the management of this patient group which is the foundation for our practise.

We are working to improve the numbers of nerve blocks being delivered through training days and shopfloor teaching – contact us for further information. We are also piloting a new project using point of care ultrasound for the diagnosis of NOF fractures, to expedite further management and reduce morbidity associated with delays.

On this page you’ll find educational materials we’ve generated, links to the national guidelines and our local proforma (new one coming soon), and bookings for our training days. If you need any further information, please don’t hesitate to contact me at brent.stevenson@uhl-tr.nhs.uk.
